That hardwood version is good because the extended magazine is two pieces. Yeah, for any accuracy shooting these from the hip isn’t the best…was fun but trying to hit gallon water jugs and 2 liter bottles was pretty futile unless right on it. Even birdshot at that range is going to do more than just sting. That said, I’ve met and hunted with many folks in grizzly territory that swear by the slug from a pump action shotgun. There’s no denying its effectiveness or reliability. The ‘Remy HD” reminds me of a barracuda; sleek and deadly.
I would contact Remington Arms or one of their warranty dealers in your area. Mossberg 590A1 beats the crappy Remington all day long. I burried the 870 as son as i got the 590A1 in my hands. Your comment above “When racking the Mossy 500, it feels like it’s about to come apart” Makes me LOL and understand that you have probably never hold one in your hands. The Remington 870 Express is the quintessential shotgun.

As far as pistol grip shotguns go this is the best pistol grip out there. That being said anytime you mix a shotgun with a pistol grip only design you know it’s going to be a mess. As far as how the Remington 870 is laid out it’s an easy to use gun. The controls are well placed and easy to reach, even in the TAC 14 format. As you can imagine, a pistol grip only 12 gauge has a lot of recoil, but luckily it’s pain-free.
Either way, you are going to be happy with your purchase. Over 10 million units of the 870 have been built since its inception, and the numbers keep on rising. The Express line has a lot to do with it, but even other models can be found for very affordable prices.

I mean, right where my left thumb goes naturally. Even though I’ve converted my 870’s safety to lefty, it’s never felt like a natural flow. If you want a quality Remington 870 forget these silly, ugly Express models and simply buy an older used 870 Wingmaster with nice bluing, engraving, walnut stock, and quality workmanship from the past . My local gun shops have plenty of twenty year old Remington 870 Magnums, Wingmasters, and Police guns with far better fit and finish for $200-$300. You can build out a high spec 870 with to suit your needs for only a few $$$ more.

I just installed the green laser on my 12 guage shockwave and was quite impressed with the daytime visibility and accuracy. It’s just fun to be honest, a middle finger to the ATF I suppose. You won’t do it fast with full-powered ammo, but you can place shots on target with some practice. The technique I use is to push forward with my support arm and pull rearward with my firing hand.
I’m no expert on shotguns, or home defense, but it’s sure nice to know you don’t have to spend a fortune for a good home defense shotgun. I’m not at the point where I “can’t stand” the finish but I’ve had the 870 Express/Tactical for 6mths +/-, bought NIB and installed the side saddle style shell holder. It was not a case of under-tightened pins that hold it on and movement making it wear. It was on there solid and still caused complete deterioration again, down to the raw metal.

The action is built in a way which prevents a huge kick, even with 3-inch shells, and allows follow-up shots to leave the gun quickly and easily. This may not be the easiest or fastest shotgun to fire under stress, but the old-school vibes can not be ignored here.
I own many firearms and this design Is by far my favorite. I’m a huge fan of these guns and I’d love to hear how you developed this for the USMS, and how they differ from the Wilson version. My ds police 37 has a folding choate to deal with the bigger bore. Not sure which is more important… a new shotgun, or a p365.

The Hardwood Home Defense features a traditional stock and foregrip mated to a receiver that has been machined from a solid block of steel for uncompromising strength and durability. Internally, twin action bars provide a silky smooth action free of binding that allows the 870 to cycle fast and reliably. The 870 incorporates a reliable cross bolt safety at the back of the trigger guard with a bolt release in front which can be used to eject a live round from the chamber without firing the weapon.
These smaller shotguns can be quite a handful to shoot, but they do offer a number of advantages over something like a full-length shotgun for home defense. Let’s take a closer look at the Remington 870 TAC-14 Hardwood shotgun. Later Wilson a class 3 manufacturer copied everything and sold them as AOWs and coined them Witness Protection Shotguns.
The mini shell adapter for the Mossberg minimizes the shell movement and reduces the possibility of the shell bouncing around in the chamber. The elevator in the Remington is a solid unit rather than an open unit like the Mossberg, which reduces the possibility of ‘shell bounce’ in the loading cycle. While my evil twin side of me said otherwise, the only logical solution was for me to purchase a 12-gauge pump shotgun that would fire the “mini” shells without any modification or adapter.
I have always liked my Remington 1100 that I have had for 40 plus years. I got my first deer using an 870 with 00 buckshot in the mixed brush, juniper breaks of Central TX. Remington didn’t even want us to ship the barrel to them for examination. They blamed it on reloads, despite us telling them we were using factory loads.
